I am having the same issue when I try to login to my account. On one computer, I have no problem logging in; on the other I am getting the "server did not respond message". Both computers on same network. I do not have any firewalls enabled on either computer.
Once in awhile there may be an instant login, the rest of the time it just sits there after authenticating and yes that happens even if we close an RDP session then come right back into it. I just did that now after working on backups and the login took just under two minutes with the Welcome circle going round and round. We were using SQL Server Express. After some Googling it appears SQL Server Express does not support SQL Server Agent. I didn't find a direct piece of Microsoft communications stating that SQL Express doesn't support SQL Server Agent, however this sentiment seems to be echoed across many forums.
